BIO

Chee Weng Yim, DMA, is a freelance musician and educator. His work involves addressing social and environmental issues, advocating for living and underrepresented composers, and providing a holistic education for his students.

Dr. Yim’s passion is in working with students to help them reach their musical and professional potential. He believes that the educator's first priority is to teach the human being and provide opportunities for growth in both his and his students’ personhood. Personhood includes skills such as empathy, compassion, kindness and a desire to work towards the betterment of not only the self, but of others. These qualities help people to become cognizant of the socio-psychological climates that impact their personal and professional lives as musicians. Dr. Yim is also passionate about inclusive programming based on diversity. He believes that music, as part of the Arts and culture, is a forum for building awareness and conversation on social and environmental justice.

Music and teaching has provided Dr. Yim opportunities as guest conductor and clinician in several countries including Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, the United States and his home country of Singapore. Besides his work as a conductor and teacher, Dr. Yim is interested in fostering collaborations between musicians specializing in different roles. He organizes reading sessions of music composed by student composers where performers and composers engage in open dialogue about new music. He recently commissioned and premiered Benjamin Webster's Partita for solo flute and chamber ensemble. Flutist Aleksandra Tevdoska performed the solo at the premiere at Georgia State University on March 12, 2019.

Before freelancing, Dr. Yim was Assistant Professor of Music at Graceland University, Assistant Band Director at Raffles Girls School, and Band Director at Assumption English School. He was the concertmaster for the Nanyang Technological University Symphonic Band and clarinetist in Windstar Ensemble and Orchestra of the Music Maker. In addition, he was the music director of the SALON concert series at Georgia State University, in which chamber music is performed.

Dr. Yim’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Specialist Diploma in Band Directing from Nanyang Technological University, a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Georgia State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting from Frost School of Music at University of Miami.
